Good work

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions, it's good to see you around! I've brought you a sunflower. You might have something to add to Elgon languages — since you seem to know the area quite well, you might also know more about the sociolinguistic situaution — things like the main lingua franca of the area, and whether Pok and Bong'om are teached in school, etc. Incidentally, I've added an {{merge}} tag to your article Mt Elgon since we already have Mount Elgon. Your text can be added to the latter, and then the former can be turned into a redirect. Keep up the good work! Cheers, — mark 21:56, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lumasaaba

[edit]

Thanks, Wanyonyi, for your note on my talk page. Did you add this to the Bukusu language article? It's very relevant info. Haven't came across you for some time, it's nice to see you editing again! — mark 18:15, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Muezzin

[edit]

I'm not sure if you're aware of my answer (not really an answer) to your question on my Talk page. If I remember, I will ask a Semiticist coming Tuesday. — mark 20:01, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have asked Harry Stroomer, and according to him the words come from distinct roots: Muezzin from the Arabic root 'DN and Hazzan from the root HZN. So the superficial similarity is merely coincidental. — mark 12:07, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

kiazi

[edit]

Hello, I'm here to ask the meaning of kiazi in Swahili, since potato and sw:kiazi are linked with interwiki, but the photo in sw:kiazi seems that "kiazi" in Swahili means yam. --Puzzlet Chung 03:48, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Kiazi is a generic term used generally as a reference to potatoes, though this is not actually correct - it actually means edible root. The term should be used with a qualifier to denote the actual root being referred to: for example, yam is casually called kiazi kikuu - meaning large root, while sweet potatoes - borrowing from English usage - are called viazi vitamu - literally meaning sweet potatoes. In Kenya, kiazi is generally used to refer to the Irish Potato, and in the (very few) communities that grow yams, there are different names for the different varieties of yams - the white yam, for example, is called danga, while another variety is called mtubwi. As such, the use of kiazi to refer to a yam would be correct in much the same way that root crop would be a correct reference, in English, to cassava: technically correct but not informative enough. Wanyonyi 06:05, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The text in sw:kiazi seems to indicate potato, because it mention Solanaceae, (scientific branch in which potato is classified,) but the picture shows a photograph of yams. Do you think sw:kiazi should be a disambiguation page, or just alter the image? --Puzzlet Chung 14:08, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would think kiazi should be a disambiguation page that then links to the specific cases. In fact, I will work on that soon! Wanyonyi 15:43, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:984Capital fm logo.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:984Capital fm logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 19:07, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image permission problem with Image:Raila2.jpg

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Raila2.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Svens Welt (talk) 15:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Raila.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 15:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Svens Welt (talk) 15:43, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Pwanyonyi! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 6 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

  1. Burudi Nabwera - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Matatu.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:00, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Call for Wikipedians in Residence in Africa

[edit]

Hello,

I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell@doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf@africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.

If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/

Best regards, Islahaddow

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. File permission problem with File:CarolNyambane.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CarolNyambane.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Caroline Mutoko, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
